10 Unbelievable Things Astronauts Experience in Space

Astronauts experience microgravity When astronauts are in space, they enter a state of microgravity, where the effects of gravity are significantly reduced.

Astronauts grow taller in space:  Due to the absence of gravity compressing their spines, astronauts can actually grow taller while in space. On average, they can gain up to 2 inches (5 centimeters) in height.

Astronauts have to exercise for several hours each day: To combat the effects of prolonged exposure to microgravity, astronauts must engage in rigorous exercise routines.

Astronauts experience changes in vision:  Prolonged space travel can affect astronauts' vision. Some experience a condition called Spaceflight-Associated Neuro-Ocular Syndrome (SANS), where their vision becomes blurry or their eyesight changes.

Astronauts wear diapers during launch and re-entry During the intense periods of launch and re-entry, astronauts wear specialized diapers called "Maximum Absorbency Garments" (MAGs) to manage bodily functions.

Astronauts' sense of taste changes in space:  Microgravity affects astronauts' sense of taste. In space, their nasal congestion increases, making their sense of taste less effective.

Astronauts can't cry in space Due to the lack of gravity, tears don't flow down the cheeks like they do on Earth. Instead, they form into little balls that can cling to the eyes. As a result, astronauts have to wipe away their tears with a cloth.

Astronauts have a special sleeping bag In space, astronauts sleep in a sleeping bag that is attached to the wall or the floor of their spacecraft or space station module.

Astronauts can't shower in space Instead of traditional showers, astronauts use specially formulated no-rinse shampoo and body wash. They apply these products and then towel off the excess without the need for water.

Astronauts have a "space smell":  After spending time in space during a spacewalk, astronauts have reported that their spacesuits and equipment have a distinct smell.
