Make Effective Learning Notes Using these 7 Tips

Focus on keywords  You must learn to filter out unnecessary details and focus only on keywords. It's important to remember that you didn't score because you wrote down every word spoken in class; You scored because you focused on the primary keywords of the discussion. If you have paid attention to the lectures, you will remember the same from the keywords. The problem with writing everything down in a notebook is that you're not just listening; Your mind is focused on completing the notes.

Tabulate the information   My teammates were preparing notes on the case laws of Bilateral Investment Treaties (BITs) when a senior teammate asked me to tabulate them all. a word file. It is not that I had never made tabular data; It's just that I always took it lightly and didn't do it long enough. However, I spent hours tabulating the data. My senior referred me to my notes which were arranged in a table, and I realized how easy it became to access and retrieve information in tabular form.

Outline important pieces of information  Sometimes you end up writing too much that requires rewriting the information. When you are rewriting notes, make sure you underline or color-mark the important points. This exercise helps in two ways: first, it directs the reader's attention to the most relevant parts of the text; Second, the practice of marking keywords helps with memorization because the mind gets to the highlighted parts more easily.

Write in Legible Handwriting  Poor handwriting sometimes fails to get the information out of their notes. When I say you need good handwriting, I don't expect you to have the best handwriting. Only the kind that is legible. The more effort the mind makes to access and store information from a source, the more difficult it becomes to remember the information. Make it easy for your mind to access information - and this can only happen if you write legibly.

Use diagrams and flow charts  The art of condensing information is not a cakewalk. You must know how to process information and make it presentable. Many times you can do that with the help of diagrams and flow charts. Personally speaking, this technique does wonders. There is no point in note-making if you fail to gather data from and retain it. The mind needs an easy route to memory, and diagrammatic representation really does the work.

Review your notes  After you've finished taking your notes, the note-review process needs to start soon. The human mind forgets information very quickly. Within 24 hours, you typically lose an average of 40% memory retention, and the best way to combat this is to review your notes as soon as possible after taking them.

Execute your note-taking method  we only have 5 steps to go until we reach note-taking! All the previous steps may seem unnecessary at first, but it is not. At least not until you've mastered all the note-taking methods and you've already developed a sixth sense of which one you should choose. Until you develop this sixth sense, you will always want to go through all the steps on this list to make an informed and conscious decision.
