How to Survive MCAT Math Without a Calculator

Brush Up on Mental Math:

Practice mental math techniques to perform basic arithmetic calculations quickly. This includes addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Work on your ability to estimate and round numbers to make calculations more manageable.

Memorize Key Formulas:

Memorize essential math formulas and equations that you may need during the exam. Focus on algebra, geometry, and trigonometry, as these are the areas most commonly tested on the MCAT.

Practice Without a Calculator:

When practicing MCAT-style questions, deliberately avoid using a calculator. This will help you become more comfortable with manual calculations and improve your speed and accuracy.

Use Approximations:

For complex calculations, use approximations to simplify the problem. Round numbers to the nearest whole number or use fractions to make calculations easier.

Master Scientific Notation:

Familiarize yourself with scientific notation, as it is commonly used in scientific calculations. This will make it easier to perform calculations involving very large or very small numbers.

Practice Under Timed Conditions:

Time management is crucial on the MCAT. Practice answering math-related questions within the time constraints of the exam to simulate real test conditions.

Use Scratch Paper:

The MCAT provides scratch paper for you to jot down calculations, diagrams, and notes. Use it to your advantage. Write out the steps of your calculations to avoid mistakes and stay organized.

Focus on Problem-Solving Skills:

Understand that MCAT math questions are not just about calculation; they often require critical thinking and problem-solving. Carefully read the question, break it down into smaller steps, and use your knowledge and reasoning skills to arrive at an answer.
