Teacher’s Day in India is celebrated on the 5th of September since 1962 when Dr. Sarvappali Radhakrishnan was approached by some students to seek permission to celebrate his birthday. In return, he asked it to be called and celebrated as Teacher’s Day. “Instead of celebrating my birthday, it would be my privilege if September 5 is observed as Teachers’ Day,” Dr Radhakrishnan said in 1962.
Dr Sarvapplai Radhakrishnan was always admired and respected by his students at Presidency College, Chennai and the University of Calcutta where he taught Philosophy. He believed that true teachers help students to think rationally and independently.
Teachers’ Day 2022 in India is celebrated on 5th September. However, Guru Purnima is another day dedicated to the Teachers in India and this year it was celebrated on 13th July 2022. This day is celebrated to honour the contribution and impact of the teachers in the lives of the students.
Every year on Teachers’ Day, students celebrate this day with great enthusiasm and excitement. Students offer gifts, flowers, chocolates, and greeting cards to their teachers as a token of appreciation and respect for the guidance and mentoring they have provided to the students.
International Teachers Day is celebrated on the 5th of October every year. The day is celebrated to commemorate and honour teachers across the world. The idea is the recognise the crucial role of the teachers in the field of educational advancement and their significant contribution to the development of the younger generation which leads to the development of modern society.
National Teachers Day is Celebrated on the Tuesday of the first full week of May, therefore there is no fixed to celebrate the National Teachers in the US. Moreover, the whole week is dedicated as Teacher Appreciation Week which involves a lot of activities for the teachers as an expression of gratitude from the students.
National Teachers Day in Korea is celebrated in the mid of May. It all started when a group of Red Cross youth visited their ill teacher in hospital in 1963. Later in 1965, the holiday was moved to mid-May (as it is presently) to coincide with the birth anniversary of King Sejong the Great (1397-1450).
16th January is celebrated as Teacher’s day (วันครู Wan Kruu) in Thailand every year. It is also a school holiday. In Thailand, on this day, teachers gather to remember and reminisce about their first teachers. Thai people have a Wai Kru ceremony to worship and respect their teacher.
Malaysia celebrated Teachers Day on 16th May which is also called Hari Guru in the Malay language. There is no holiday on the day, however, Teachers Day is celebrated with great enthusiasm.
