RS Aggarwal Solutions Class 9 Maths Chapter 5 Coordinate Geometry – Overview
Here are some of the key topics of Chapter 5 of RS Aggarwal Solutions Class 9 Maths:
- Cartesian System: The cartesian system is the system that describes the position of a point in a plane. In a cartesian system, there are two lines perpendicular to each other and a point is denoted on it by referring to these lines. The horizontal axis is the XX’ or X-axis and the vertical axis is YY’ or Y-axis.
- Origin: The point where these perpendicular axes intersect and are denoted by ‘O’.
- OX: The positive X-direction.
- OY: The positive Y-direction.
- OX’: The negative X-direction.
- OY’: The negative Y-direction.
- Quadrant: The two axes divide the cartesian system into 4 parts and follow the numbering I, II, III, and IV in an anticlockwise direction from the OX axis.
- The coordinate axis is the other name for these axes.
- In a cartesian plane, there are axes and 4 quadrants. The cartesian plane is also known as the coordinate plane.
- Steps To Find Coordinates Of A Point
- X-Coordinate: It is the perpendicular distance of a point from the y-axis which is measured along the x-axis and has a positive value if it lies on the positive side of the x-axis and a negative value if it is on the negative side. The x-coordinate of a point is termed its abscissa.
- Y-Coordinate: It is the perpendicular distance of a point from the x-axis which is measured along the y-axis and has a positive value if it lies on the positive side of the y-axis and a negative value if it is on the negative side. The y-coordinate of a point is also termed its ordinate.
- Both the x and y coordinates of a point are placed within a bracket with the x coordinate preceding the y coordinate, for example (x1, y1).
- Rules govern the relationship between the signs of a coordinate point and the quadrant in which it lies.
- Quadrant I – It is a point in the first quadrant that has positive x and y coordinates (+,+) as the first quadrant lies on the positive side of both the x and y axes.
- Quadrant II – It is a point in the second quadrant that has a negative x and a positive y coordinate (-,+) as the second quadrant lies on the negative side of the x-axis and the positive side of the y-axis.
- Quadrant III – It is a point in the third quadrant that has a negative x and a negative y coordinate (-,-) as the third quadrant lies on the negative side of both the x-axis and the y-axis.
- Quadrant IV – It is a point in the fourth quadrant that has a positive x and a negative y coordinate (+,-) as the fourth quadrant lies on the negative side of the x-axis and the positive side of the y-axis.
- The coordinates of the origin or point O is (0,0) as it is at zero distance from both the x-axis and y-axis.
