This prose by Smt. Mahadevi Verma will let you know about her personality of, basically her servant Bhaktin’s past and present. You will see how she lived in the past, all her struggles, and how she lived a hard-working and self-respecting life before she started working at Mahadevi’s house. It is also shown how she fought with the patriarchal society for her and her daughters.

The author has described Bhaktin as a person with a small height and lean body, and thin lips. Her name was Lakshmi and she used to wear a necklace around her neck. She didn’t want the author to use her real name, so by seeing her necklace, the author named her ‘Bhaktin’. In terms of Seva Bhakti Dharma, she was like Hanuman.

Lakshmi or Bhaktin was the only daughter of Ahir, the famous historic village of Jhusi, brought up by her stepmom. She was married at the age of nine to the son of a Gopalak of Handia village. In the third passage, you will see how misfortune she got when her second daughter became a widow. Her family wanted to take her property. The life of Bhaktin was around the writer. She used to make tea for the hostel girls and let them taste the writer’s breakfast. The last passage of Bhaktin is left incomplete because the author wanted to leave it like that.
