Types of Questions Based On GATE Mechanical Engineering Syllabus and Exam Pattern

The GATE question paper consists of multiple choice and numerical answer type questions. The Multiple choice questions consist of 4 options, out of which the candidate is expected to choose the right answers. In Numerical type questions, the candidates must enter the numerical values as the answer.

Candidates must make use of the virtual keyboard provided to enter the answer. Here are the different types of questions the candidates are supposed to answer :

  1. Recall– The question is based on the principle, proven facts, formulae, or laws of the mechanical engineering discipline. The candidates are expected to answer these questions from his/her memory or from a one-line computation.
  2. Comprehension– This helps in estimating the candidate’s understanding of the concepts in mechanical engineering subjects. Candidates are expected to derive simple conclusions based on fundamental ideas.
  3. Application– This section covers the questions where the candidates must apply their knowledge and skills through logical reasoning or by computations.
  4. Analysis and Synthesis– This section deals to test the candidate’s ability to deal with data. The candidate is expected to solve and identify data that are independent of each other. The question comes in a linked format, meaning the 1st question is mandatory to answer the successor question.
  5. Common Data Questions– Here multiple questions depend on a common data problem or passage. Multiple questions are formed based on the given input data. Each question carries 2 marks and independent questions can be derived separately.
  6. Linked Answer Questions– This section consists of problem-solving where candidates are expected to solve a problem followed by 2 questions. Each question carries 2 marks and can be derived separately.
