RS Aggarwal Solutions Class 7 Maths Chapter 4 Ex 4.5 – Overview

Multiplication Of Rational Numbers

It can be defined as performing the product operation between the two rational numbers. Also, the product taken between any two rational numbers is equivalent to the product performed between the numerator values divided by the product performed between the denominator values.

Product of two fraction values = The Product of their respective numerator values /The Product of their respective denominator values.

Eg: Take any two rational numbers, let us take 2/5 and 4/7, in the case the product of the rational numbers that we have taken will be as follows:

2/5 * 4/7 = (2*4) / (5*7) = 8 / 35

Rules For The Multiplication Of Rational Numbers

  • For Similar Sign

The product of two +ve, positive numbers or the two -ve, negative numbers will always yield the resultant rational number as positive.

  • For Different Signs

The product of one +ve, positive number, and the one -ve, negative number, or vice versa will always yield the resultant rational number as negative.

Multiplication between two rational numbers – Augmentation Properties

There are Seven diverse significant augmentation properties that you should know for normal numbers:

  • The Multiplication Property of – 1: For any given real number

a, (−1) × a = −a

  • When the Rational number multiplied by – 1 is the inverse of the real number.
  • The Multiplicative Identity Property: For any given number:

a, (1) × a = a

  • Take any number, multiply it by 1, it will always yield the original number taken earlier.
  • The Zero Property of Multiplication: Take any real number, this will apply to it:

a, (0) × a = 0

Always remember that any number multiplied with zero, 0 will always yield the zero, 0 as a result.

  • The Associative Property of Multiplication: let us take any Real numbers say a, b, and c. Then here, the following rule will be applicable:

(a * b) * c = a * (b * c)

It is much similar to the Associative Property of Addition.

  • The Commutative Property of Multiplication: Take any real numbers

Let us say a and b

Here, the below rule will apply;

a (b) = b (a)

It is much similar to the Commutative Property of Addition.
