7 Fun Ways to Get Kids Into Engineering

Build with LEGO:  LEGO sets are a fantastic way to introduce engineering concepts to kids. Encourage them to follow instructions to build complex structures or challenge them to create their own designs.

Conduct Science Experiments Engage kids in hands-on experiments that emphasize engineering principles. For example, you can build a simple bridge using everyday materials like popsicle sticks or paper cups and challenge them to make it stronger or more stable.

Design and Build Rube Goldberg Machines:  Rube Goldberg machines are elaborate contraptions that perform simple tasks through a series of chain reactions. Encourage kids to design and build their own Rube Goldberg machines using household objects like dominos, marbles, ramps, and pulleys.

Organize Engineering Challenges  Set up engineering challenges that require kids to think critically and come up with innovative solutions. For example, challenge them to build a paper tower that can support the weight of a small object using only a limited number of sheets of paper and tape.

Explore Robotics:  Introduce kids to the world of robotics by providing them with beginner-friendly robot kits. There are various options available, such as LEGO Mindstorms or programmable robots like Dash and Dot.

Visit Maker Spaces or Engineering Museums:  Take kids on field trips to maker spaces or engineering museums in your area. These spaces often offer hands-on activities and workshops where children can explore different aspects of engineering.

Watch Engineering-related Shows and Videos:  Show kids educational videos or TV shows that highlight engineering marvels and explain engineering concepts in a fun and engaging way.
