9 Eco-Friendly Campuses to Consider for Your College List

American University in Washington, D.C. American University established a Green Teaching Certification program that rewards professors for incorporating sustainability content into their lesson plans.

Colby College in Waterville, Maine Colby’s environmental studies program is one of the oldest in the United States, and it offers a partnership with Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences, an ocean conservation research lab, where students get hands-on environmental science experience.

College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine  No. 1 on The Princeton Review’s list of Top 50 Green Colleges, this school’s sustainability efforts are impressive. In the spring of 2013, it adopted an Energy Framework that uses local and renewable energy sources.

Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado  The Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System  measures the sustainability performance of colleges and universities, and CSU has the highest STARS score ever received. The university has 37 LEED Gold buildings, with several more pending certification.

Cornell University in Ithaca, New York  Cornell offers ample opportunities for students to learn about sustainability, with over 400 courses and 28 majors available through the Atkinson Center for a Sustainable Future. 

Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon  In addition to being located in one of America’s greenest cities, Lewis and Clark College requires all new buildings to be LEED Gold, and 100 percent of the electricity from the school is generated by green power sources.

Stanford University in Stanford, California  Stanford has allocated $485 million to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and water consumption and meet their energy needs by 2050. The school also has a recycling program that keeps approximately 65 percent of its solid waste out of landfills,

State University of New York  College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse, New York - SUNY-ESF is the only school in the United States with 100 percent of its academic programs oriented toward natural resources and designed environments.

Warren Wilson College in Asheville, North Carolina  Warren Wilson has a long-established campus farm that supplies local and organic food in the cafeteria. There’s an Environmental and Social Justice Crew that helps students support various social and environmental issues.
