There is nothing constant in this world except change. And this is more so in the field of education. The revamping of the syllabus of the Biology subject by the Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad (U.P. Board) for the Intermediate level students with effect from the Academic year 2018-19 is a welcome change. It is indeep a welcome move by the authorities of the U.P. Board to segregate the syllabus into specific division for the first year and the second year. The revised syllabus is futuristic and has incorporated various topics for the very first time which make for interesting experiential learning and freshness both for the teachers and the taught.
The experience of teaching the subject for over four decades enlighted me to the fact that the subject can be learnt in many different ways. The advent of information technology has provided additional vistas of learning in the form of audio/video lectures, still the preference of the learners is for printed materials in the form of text books. Accordingly, this book has been written in a simple and lucid manner thoroughly illustrated with neat and accurate diagrams, that make for easy understanding of the subject. To reduce monotony, the description of the topics have been kept short and to the point. Each chapter begins with learning objectives to help the students to focus on understanding the specific topic under study. At the end of each chapter, self-assessment exercises have been provided to enable the readers to make a fair assessment of their learning of the subject.
