It is quite difficult to find any industry which does not use solvents, since their utility is universal. Commercially solvents are consumed on very large scale for extraction, purification, crystallization, separation, isolation, precipitation, synthesis and also for many other diversified uses.

Solvents are used by various industries of prime importance like drugs, cosmetics, food, oil and fats, perfumes and flavours, chemicals and reagents, polymer etc. Textile, leather, paper, furniture, dyes and paints, minerals and metals, tanning are the other industries which also use solvents for the processing. Solvents also play an important role in maintaining the standards and in the manufacture of several products for internal use.

Enormous quantity of solvents of high grade purity is desired for analysis of pharmaceuticals or medicaments. Therefore, an attempt is being made to quote the tests and standards conventionally used for their chromatographic analysis.
