Becoming a chartered accountant is a glorious career ambition to follow. That’s why
thousands of students with a commerce background beeline to kick start their career by
clearing the CA Foundation exam, but only a handful get to taste success. Even if you do
manage to get past the threshold to get this career goal rolling, you are looking at years of
exam taking and training before you can finally call yourself a chartered accountant. No
wonder why the CA exams conducted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India
(ICAI) are considered one of the most difficult to crack.
The CA Syllabus is vast and the journey from start to finish is spread over at least 5 years,
given you keep clearing each level in the first go. Perseverance is key, but so is the ability to
stay focussed, plan ahead and understand the ethos of this examination process inside out. For
that, CA previous year papers can be a great tool of assistance. From understanding the
exam pattern and how it has changed over the years, familiarising oneself with the nature of
questions and identifying the topics that ICAI gives importance to – the benefits of working
with CA exam question papers are manifold.
The Exam Pattern
First and foremost, however, you must invest some time and effort in understanding the
current exam pattern, so that you know what you are signing up for. This is especially crucial
given ICAI’s penchant for revising the exam pattern as per the demands of the industry.
Currently, the entire CA course is divided into four levels –
CA Foundation,
CA
Intermediate, three-year Articleship Training, and
CA Final. The eligibility for the CA
Foundation exam is Class 12, and from here you go on to the subsequent levels as you clear
the exam for each stage.
The CA Foundation exam covers four subjects – Principles and Practices of Accounting,
Business Law and Business Correspondence and Reporting, Business Mathematics and
Logical Reasoning and Statistics, and Business Economics and Business and Commercial
Knowledge. The first two papers are subjective in nature and the other two carry objective-
type questions. There is negative marking of 0.25 marks for every wrong answer in the MCQ
based papers.
Candidates who qualify the CA Foundation are eligible to appear in the
CA Intermediate
exam, which is divided into two groups and eight subjects. Students can take the exams for
these two groups together or separately, depending on their preparation. The subjects for
group I exam are Accounting, Corporate Laws & Other Laws, Cost and Management
Accounting, Taxation, Income-Tax Law and Indirect Taxes. The papers for Group II exam
are Advanced Accounting, Auditing and Assurance, Enterprise Information Systems &
Strategic Management, and Financial Management & Economics for Finance. Starting from
May 2109, some of these papers will follow a mix of MCQs and subjective type questions.
However, there’ll be no provision of negative marking.
Clearing the CA Intermediate exam makes you eligible for the
CA Final Exam. Candidates
are also required to complete a three-year Articleship Training, and your performance in this
training is reflected in the final CA mark sheet.
The CA Final exam is based on a chartered accountancy curriculum and entails a vast
syllabus spread over subjects like Financial Reporting, Strategic Financial Management,
Advanced Auditing and Professional Ethics, Corporate and Economic Laws, Strategic Cost
Management and Performance Evaluation, Risk Management, Financial Services and Capital
Markets, International Taxation Paper, Economic Laws Paper Global Financial Reporting
Standards, Multidisciplinary Case Study Paper, Direct Tax Laws and International Taxation,
and Indirect Tax Laws.
