It is a great pleasure for me to place the Sixteenth (Revised) Edition of Applied English Grammar and Composition in the hands of the readers. The material has been rewritten/reset according to the latest guidelines issued by CBSE regarding Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) in English Communicative & Language and Literature.
Examples and exercises have been framed keeping in view the latest sample papers and syllabus for English—Communicative & Language and Literature issued by CBSE. Since, the emphasis has shifted to thinking skills such as inference, evaluation and analysis, arriving at conclusion or presenting argument with supporting examples, care has been taken to develop, improve and sharpen such skills in students.
As per the new syllabus for Class IX, Section A: Reading, for SA–I, consists of two reading passages–Factual and Discursive. In SA–II, again two reading passages–Factual and Literary (Prose only) and Open Text Based Assessment (OTBA) to test analytical and critical thinking skills. In Section B: Writing and Grammar, Diary entry is a new topic whereas Letter Writing, Debate, Speech, Notice and Short Newspaper Report have been deleted.
Similarly for Class X, Section A: Reading consists of two unseen passages–Factual and Discursive. Section B: Writing and Grammar is restricted to Letter to the Editor/Article and Short Story.
